Affective Thinking Lesson
Perseverance & Resilience
What is the character strength of perseverance?
How can the character strength of perseverance be used in my life to help me?
- Take a walk outside if weather permits discuss the following scenario (research shows just being out in nature has a profound effect on brain chemistry and focus).
- Find a small plant
- Think about the following questions: What would happen to the plant if you grabbed it? What would happen to the plant if a big storm came up?
- Find a tree- What would happen if you grabbed the tree? What would happen to the tree in a big storm?
- Which would you choose to be during a big storm? a plant or tree
Read the story.
People are like plants and trees in that we can all soak up rain and sun. But unlike seedlings that will only grow to certain species, humans can choose what to become. We can choose to grow our roots deep in the earth to make us sturdy and strong. We can choose to be like the plant or tree. What gives the plants and trees the ability to grow?
In our lives, the sun represents the love we receive in this world (our parent’s love, and the love of important people); the rain represents the challenges we face; and the roots in the soil represent how we respond to our experiences. If we only have love without challenges, we will shrivel up from the heat. If we only have rain and hide from the sun, we will get washed out. But if we have a good balance of sun and rain, then we can learn from our experiences and grow our roots deep into the earth to make us strong and steadfast. As I was walking, I tripped over the root from the tree. I caught myself and became stronger of my surroundings. Think about some challenges you may have had before like joining a new sports team, being on morning announcements, or a contest or we can choose to not challenge ourselves emotionally or academically by giving up.
Challenges could be having to do chores, having too much homework, having too many commitments and not enough time, or doing what your parents and teachers want us to do when we want to do other things, some may even be more serious such as hunger, money, divorce, cancer, grandparents or pets dying.) Point out that in our lives when we feel loved, or give love, when we feel hope, gratitude and respect for others – these experiences are like the sun – they help us to be successful in life. The things we cannot control (such as other peoples’ behavior or our environment) are the challenges we face, like the tree experiencing rain. Both are just part of life. Choosing to have a positive attitude, and choosing to have this perspective about our lives, will ultimately help us to grow stronger, and grow into a stronger person like the tree.
The tree is “resilient” because it is able to withstand challenges and to grow, despite the conditions or the weather around it. Explain that when we choose to act like the tree, we can be resilient too.
Resilience: “the process of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences.”
Activity- We currently have challenges in our lives. We have to persevere and become resilient in the wake of the Covid 19 virus with having to be self-isolated and having digital learning from home.
1.On a piece of drawing paper, draw a large tree with a rain cloud in one corner and a sun in the other.
2.The rain cloud represents new challenges we are faced with because of the Corona Virus and staying in our homes to do schoolwork.
a.On the cloud, write 2 challenges or obstacles you have faced because of this pandemic. Later, you can add to it.
3.The sun represents love, support, and happiness.
b.On the sun, write 2 sources of support, love, and happiness you have received during this pandemic.
4.The branches represent how we are resilient. Write on your branches at least 2 ways you have adapted during this time.
5.The roots represent the character traits we use. Add to the roots any character traits you feel have helped you. Use the acrostic poem to help with ideas.
6.- Use any other creativity on your tree and add lots of color and detail.
Acrostic Poem
Remember you are good enough
Everyone is different
Stop comparing yourself
Individuality rocks!!
Learn something new daily
Involve yourself in what you love doing
Enjoy things that make you happy
Not everyone can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
Care about yourself and others
Expect that some days won’t be great
